What if the most important moment in someone’s life happened at your church this weekend?
It could. Salvation is one of the most beautiful moments a person can experience. As a pastor, there’s nothing quite like witnessing someone turn away from their sin and accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
God is bringing people through your doors who are searching for something. They’re grasping for hope. They’re seeking something, or someone, who can help them. And God could use your message to create the moment they say yes to Jesus.
So here’s the question: How are you stewarding this opportunity?
How do you make sure you’ve created an environment where people can respond to the Gospel? How do you help them take their next step after they say yes?
Here are three practical ways to create space for people to begin their new life in Christ.
1. Give a Clear Call to Christ
At Life.Church, we provide a clear opportunity to accept Christ at the end of every service, even in our older kids and youth services. Why? Because we never want to assume everyone in the room knows Jesus. We want to make sure that every single person has the chance to accept Him.
You don’t know who’s going to walk through your doors on Sunday. But when they leave, they should be able to say, “I had the opportunity to accept Jesus today.”
How to Steward This Moment Well:
Plan ahead
Don’t leave this moment to chance. Build time into your service for a clear gospel presentation and a response. If you wait until the last minute to prepare for it, you’ll rush through it or skip it altogether.
Set the tone
This is a powerful, sacred moment. Create an environment that matches the weight of what’s happening. This might look like dimming the lights, or playing subtle music in the background. Give people space to respond without feeling rushed or on display.
Preach the Gospel clearly
Make sure your explanation is concise and complete. Include:
- What sin is and why it separates us from God
- Why we need a Savior
- What Jesus did on the cross
- How to receive Jesus (confess, believe, surrender)
Move people to action.
Lead them to a specific action. Ask them to raise their hand, come to the front, or fill out a card. Give them something to do.
Prepare to the best of your ability, and then watch what God does.
Ask yourself: Is my church giving people opportunities to accept Jesus?
2. Lead Them to a Next Step
Imagine making the biggest decision of your life, a decision that flips your world upside down, and then being left on an island to figure it out on your own.
That’s how it can feel when someone gives their life to Jesus. They’ve just made the most important decision they’ll ever make, and now they’re standing in your lobby wondering, “What do I do now?”
Your role is to lead them to a clear next step.
When you prepare intentional next steps for people who just said yes to Jesus, you’re not just helping them grow closer to God; you’re helping them connect to the community He’s given them.
Examples of Next Steps:
- Provide a You Said Yes book or new believer resources at your church’s information area or new believer resources.
- Lead people to sign up for baptism (make it easy—have a form ready).
- Push them to attend a Connection Event designed for first-time guests and new believers.
- Encourage them to join a small group so they can grow with others.
The easier you make the next step, the more likely they are to take it. Don’t assume they know what to do. Tell them exactly where to go and what to do next.
Ask yourself: If someone gave their life to Jesus at my church today, would they know what to do next?
3. Follow Up with Them
How are you checking up on the people who just made the most important decision of their lives?
Here’s what often happens: Someone says yes to Jesus on Sunday, and then Monday comes. The service is over. The moment has passed. And they’re left wondering if anyone noticed. If anyone cares. If this decision was real.
Follow-up matters.
It can be easy to focus on next weekend or the next person. But some of the best ways to lead people who just gave their lives to Jesus are simple: a phone call, a text message, or a personal note.
Our journeys with Jesus aren’t easy. Jesus told His disciples they’d face trouble in this world, but to take heart, because He has overcome the world (John 16:33 NIV). When people face trouble after saying yes to Jesus, it’s hard to keep going if no one is checking on them.
What This Looks Like:
Collect their information.
Have a way to capture the name and phone number of everyone who responds to the gospel. Whether it’s a card, a text-to-connect system, or a conversation at your church’s information area, get their info.
Reach out within 24 hours.
Send a text or make a call. It doesn’t have to be long. Just let them know: “We’re so glad you said yes to Jesus. We’re praying for you. Here’s your next step.”
Keep the conversation going.
Invite them to baptism. Connect them to a small group leader. Check in again in a week or two. Don’t let them walk this journey alone.
Ask yourself: What system do I have in place to follow up with people who give their lives to Jesus?
Keep Crushing It!
Creating an environment where people say yes to Jesus doesn’t happen by accident. It requires intentionality. It requires heart. And it requires a team that genuinely cares about people taking their next step.
God is bringing people through your doors who are ready to say yes. Your job is to make sure they have the opportunity and don’t walk away alone.
