How to Prep Your Church for an Amazing Fall Season
A new season is approaching. Vacations are wrapping up, kids are heading back to school, and families are stepping into a new routine. Is your church ready to be part of that routine?
Being part of your church’s life takes more than a weekend service. It means showing up on their calendars and in their everyday rhythms. Fall is one of the most natural re-engagement moments of the entire year, and the churches that show up intentionally in this season are the ones families keep coming back to.
Here are three engagement strategies your church can use to extend your reach and influence.
Serve the Schools in Your Community
The biggest pillars of most communities are the local schools. Showing up in schools shows families you’re genuinely invested in their kids, both inside and outside your four walls.
Ask yourself: how can your church make a real impact on the schools in your community this fall?
- Host a school supply drive: collect valuable supplies from your congregation and donate them to local schools before the year starts.
- Show up to sports practices and games: a visible, encouraging presence at school events builds trust and relationships over time.
- Serve in the cafeterias during lunch: some schools welcome volunteers; this is a simple, high-impact way to show love.
Here’s an encouraging example: one Life.Church campus in Midwest City, Oklahoma has built relationships with 10 different schools. That didn’t happen overnight — and it didn’t happen through sheer willpower. The pastors recognized that people in their congregation already had ties and relationships with those schools, and they leaned into those connections.
You don’t have to start with 10 schools. You just have to start with one person who already has a connection.
Chances are, there’s at least one person in your church right now with a relationship to a local school (teacher, board member, volunteer, etc.). That’s your starting point. One connection, one conversation, one act of service, and you’re on your way to becoming a church that your community knows, trusts, and loves.
Teach Trusted Curriculum
As families get back into their routines, there’s no better time to set up your kids and youth ministry with a strong curriculum. The goal isn’t just a great Sunday experience; it’s content that carries the conversation from the church building to the car ride home, to the living room couch, to the school hallway on Monday morning.
Here are four powerful free resources from Open Network to help you lead your next generation toward becoming fully devoted followers of Christ this fall.

Fall is also the perfect time to get your congregation moving, not just attending. The churches that thrive long-term are the ones where people aren’t just showing up on Sunday; they’re serving and making an impact together throughout the week.
As families settle into their fall rhythms, give them something to be a part of. These two high-impact opportunities could be your next step.
- Host a Neighborhood Fall Fest: A Fall Fest is one of the most effective low-barrier community outreach events a church can run. It’s fun, it’s family-friendly, and it opens the door for real relationships with people who may have never set foot in your church. Download the Neighborhood Fall Fest resources →
- Mobilize your church through Local Missions — You want to be involved. You want to serve the lost, lonely, and broken. Partner with nonprofits and organizations in your community to extend and strengthen the impact of your church. Use these resources to learn how to strategically select and form relationships with Local Mission Partners that are transforming their communities. Download Local Missions Resources →
When your congregation is locked in and engaged, they become your most powerful outreach tool. Families who serve invite their friends. People who feel connected keep coming back. And a church that’s known for showing up in its community becomes a mission families want to be part of.
